Here is a list of frequently asked questions, adopted from the ReachOut Orb how-to guide. This page is designed to help answer key questions about how to utilise ReachOut Orb within your classroom. It covers topics such as how to register and log in, and how to create your avatar. It also outlines the key features and definitions used in ReachOut Orb. Installing ReachOut Orb

Will I need IT support when installing ReachOut Orb?

  • It is possible that throughout the installation process you may require IT support. We recommend that you consider the following:
    • Do I need an administrator’s permission to install the application?
    • Do I have a firewall that may block the application?

How do I install ReachOut Orb (iPad with iOS version 8.0 or later)?

  • Visit ReachOut.com/Orb on your iPad and follow the link to the App Store.
  • Note: You will need to be connected to the internet to do this.
  • Select "Get" and then "Install".
  • Once the app is finished installing, select "Open" or find the app on your home screen and select it.
  • Once the game is open, press anywhere to begin.

How do I install ReachOut Orb on a Windows desktop computer?

  • Download the installation file from ReachOut.com/Orb.
  • System requirements: Microsoft® Windows® 10+, XP/Vista or later.
  • Once the download is complete you can find the game on either your desktop or in your "downloads" folder.
  • Run the installation file.
  • Note: If you have downloaded the Orb application in the past, you will be asked if you want to replace the existing application. Select "Yes".
  • A "User Access Control" system dialogue will appear. Click "Yes" to continue with the installation.
  • Note: If the message "Windows SmartScreen prevented an unrecognised application from starting" appears, you can safely choose "Run Anyway" to install ReachOut Orb.
  • Note: If the Installation Application is "blocked", please contact your system administrator.
  • The installation wizard window will be shown, click "Next" and then "Continue".
  • Once installed click "Finished" on the installation wizard application.
  • Double click on the application to start or click the Orb application in your "Start Menu".

How do I install ReachOut Orb on a Mac desktop computer?

  • Download the installation file from ReachOut.com/Orb.
  • System requirements: Mac OS X 10.7+
  • Once the download is complete you can find the game on either your desktop or in your "Downloads" folder.
  • To install double click on the .dmg file you have downloaded.
  • Note: If you have downloaded the Orb application in the past, you will be asked if you want to replace the existing application. Select "Yes".
  • Click and drag the blue "Orb" icon into your "Applications" folder in the dialogue box. If prompted, enter your OS X password.
  • Once this is successful, you can access ReachOut Orb through the "Applications" folder.
  • Double click on the application to start.

How do I uninstall ReachOut Orb from a Windows desktop computer?

  • Go to "control panel".
  • Select "programs and features".
  • Look for an Application called "Orb".
  • Double click the application to uninstall.

How do I uninstall ReachOut Orb from a Mac desktop computer?

  • Click on the Orb application and drag into your trash folder, or right click and select "Move to trash".

Registration and proxy settings

Do I need to be online to register?

  • Yes you need to be online to register, log in, and save your progress for another device. However, you don’t need to be online for actual game play.
  • The app needs to connect to the Orb servers when you register or log in.
  • Ensure that you are connected to either a local network (WiFi or wired) or to your mobile data connection (3G or 4G).
  • If you are unable to connect, you may need IT assistance – see “What do I do if I’m having trouble logging in” below.

What do I do if I am having trouble logging in?

  • Select the option “Having trouble logging in?” on the registration page.
  • If you are at school or on some other network (such as your workplace), you may need to connect to a “proxy” first. Select "Yes" to open proxy settings.
  • You may need IT assistance with setting up a proxy – see “How do I enter proxy settings” below.

How do I enter proxy settings?

  • To enter the proxy details, press the link “Having trouble logging in?” on the login or registration page.
  • In the help page that appears, press the “Enter Proxy” button at the top and enter the address and port of the proxy. Your IT manager should be able to provide these details.
  • There are some “quick links” for public schools which you can also try based on your location - these have the same action as entering the details using the button.
  • When saving, the Orb will test the proxy using the details you have entered; if you are unable to save the proxy settings:
  • Check that the information you have entered has no typos/errors.
  • Ensure that you are in fact connected to the network by using your browser to view a website.

Do I have to enter these proxy settings every time I or my students play the game?

  • No. You only have to do this once for each device if you remain on the same network. It will work for any other student using this device in the future.

How do I enter a username and password to access the network via proxy?

  • Your proxy may require you to enter a username and/or password to access the network.
  • There are two ways it may ask for your details:
  1. In a browser: If you usually open a browser (Safari, Chrome, Edge) to enter your network username and password, exit the Orb app and open your browser to connect to the network first. When you can browse the internet in your browser return to the Orb app.
  2. All other cases: you will get a pop-up window in the Orb app asking for your username and password. For public schools, this should be your normal school sign-in details.
  • Note for IT Managers: the Orb app is unable to read PAC files and therefore unable to automatically configure itself or use the “system” settings.

Getting started

How much time should I set aside for students to play and complete the ReachOut Orb quest?

  • The ReachOut Orb game takes the average student anywhere between 60 and 90 minutes to complete, excluding lesson content.
  • Game time will vary from student to student, as they will progress at their own pace.
  • Lesson time is approximately 4 hours, which includes game play and completion of the activities outlined in the Teacher Resource. You can spread out these 4 hours across several lessons.
  • There are also optional extension activities that you can incorporate beyond this.

How do I register to play ReachOut Orb?

  • Ensure that you are connected to the internet before registering.
  • Enter your username, password and email.
  • Accept the terms and conditions (compulsory), and agree to receive ReachOut.com newsletters (optional), by checking the appropriate boxes.

How to login?

  • If you are an existing player, enter your email and then your password.
  • Select "login".
  • You can select "remember me on this device and login automatically" to skip this process in the future.

What happens if I forget my password?

  • Select the "forgot password" option on the login screen.
  • Enter the email you registered with to reset your password.
  • Login to your email.
  • Click the link provided in the email.
  • Orb will then open on a screen.
  • Follow the instructions to reset a new password.
  • Note: Make sure you check your spam folder if the email doesn’t appear in your inbox.

Settings and further information

How do I adjust the volume?

  • If using a device:
    • You can adjust your volume manually by using the buttons on your device.
    • Alternatively:
      • Go to the map interface.
      • Open the menu in the top-left corner of the screen.
      • Select "Settings".
      • Here there will be a volume meter where you can grab the icon and drag it to the level of volume you require.

How do I adjust my iPad’s tilt settings for the Orb rolling challenges?

  • Go to the map interface.
  • Open the menu in the top-left corner of the screen.
  • Select "Settings".
  • Here there will be a section for tilt settings. To adjust, click "Edit tilt settings".
  • You can adjust the sensitivity (i.e. how fast the Orb rolls) by moving the slider up and down on the right-hand side.
  • Customise your settings to what suits you best.
  • Select "Calibrate".

How do I pause/resume the ReachOut Orb game?

  • When engaging with characters or rolling levels in the ReachOut Orb game, you have the option to pause the game.
  • The pause button will appear in the top-left corner.
  • Press it to pause play.
  • Press the resume button to resume play.
  • Select "World" to take you back to the world.
  • Note: If you do this, you will have to restart the exited quest/challenge upon return.

How do I reset all game data?

  • If you wish to start the game from the beginning:
    • Go to the map interface.
    • Open the menu in the top-left corner of the screen.
    • Select "Settings".
    • Click "Reset the game".
    • Warning! Selecting this option will clear all quests and items.
    • Note: Your avatar will remain the same.

What if I need further help?

  • Go to the map interface.
  • Open the menu in the top-left corner of the screen.
  • Select "Help".

How do I find out more about Orb and other resources?

  • Go to the map interface.
  • Open the menu in the top-left corner of the screen.
  • Select "About".
  • Go to "Credits".

Setting up my avatar

How do I enter my character strengths?

  • After registering as a new user of ReachOut Orb, you will be asked to select three character strengths.
  • Select each character strength by pressing on the nodes, which will feature a list of 24 character strengths.
  • Select three strengths (one for each node). Scroll through the list and double tap to select.
  • Before proceeding, if you wish to change the appearance of your avatar, click "Back".
  • Once selected, click "Next".
  • Note: The avatar’s appearance will differ depending on the strengths selected.

How do I know what my character strengths are?

  • You can identify your character strengths before setting up your avatar.
  • Refer to the Teacher Resource if you require further information on this.
  • The guide will require students to complete a short survey at www.viacharacter.org

How do I change my avatar name?

  • Go to the map interface.
  • Open the menu in the top-left corner of the screen.
  • Select "Profile".
  • You can rename your avatar here.
  • Note: You can’t change the email address that you signed up with.

ReachOut Orb features

What is The Glitch?

  • The Glitch is a force that has drained all colour from the environment. Because of The Glitch, the world is somehow different. For example, characters and machines are behaving oddly.

What’s an Orb?

  • The Orb is a manifestation of your positive energy. You need to keep it charged by regularly adding three good things about your life in the real world, and reasons why they are good.

How do I recharge my Orb?

  • Every time you log into the ReachOut Orb game, you will be asked to recharge your Orb.
  • To recharge your Orb, you must enter three good things about your day and reasons why they were good.
  • To do this, press the nodes and enter your three goods things.
  • Once completed, select "Next".

What are Murks?

  • As you roll around challenge levels restoring colour, you will encounter the Murks, which will delay your progress in restoring colour to the world. Avoid Murks, as they will set you back.
  • For more information on the different types of Murks, go to the inventory screen in the game.

Beginning your quest

How do I interact with the ReachOut Orb characters?

  • When looking at the map interface, you will see icons with character names.
  • Select the character you wish to interact with by pressing on their icon. This will take you directly to that character.
  • To engage in dialogue with the character, select the response you feel appropriate by pressing on the avatar’s dialogue.
  • Follow through until you have finished interacting with that character.

How do I know which quests are locked and unlocked?

  • After interacting with a character for the first time, you will unlock a quest.
  • You will be notified of this immediately after a character interaction by a sign stating, "Quest unlocked!".
  • You can also check your quest status in your inventory in the "Characters" section.

How will I know when a quest is complete?

  • Sometimes all you need to complete your quest is to have a conversation with a character.
  • For other quests, you will need to complete a task such as collect and pass on an item.
  • You will be notified of this immediately after a character interaction by a sign stating, "Quest complete!".
  • You can also check your quest status in your inventory in the "Characters" section.

Inventory

How do I access the inventory?

  • There is a button on the map interface called "Inventory".
  • Press this button to access the inventory.
  • The inventory contains an overview of the games features, characters you’ve met and items found.

How do I access character information?

  • There are two ways to access character information:
    • You can go to the map interface.
    • Enter the inventory.
    • Select "Characters".
    • Select the character you want more information on, to see the details regarding that character.
    • Note: This information will only become available once you have unlocked that character.
    • Alternatively, once your quest is unlocked you can enter the inventory from the "Quest unlocked" notification.

How do I check my quest status with the characters?

  • Go to the map interface.
  • Enter the inventory.
  • Select "Characters".
  • The blue tick icon beside each character indicates that your quest with that character is complete.
  • Characters without a tick have been unlocked, indicating that your quest with that character is in progress.
  • Characters whose images are not yet displayed and replaced with a question mark have not yet been unlocked.

How do I know what items I have and haven’t found?

  • Go to the map interface.
  • Enter the inventory.
  • Select "Items found".
  • Items with a blue tick are items that you have collected and used. (Usually this entails passing them on to another character).
  • Items without a blue tick are items that you have collected but not yet passed on.
  • Question marks represent those items that are yet to be collected.

Characters

How do I find a character on the map?

  • The main way to find your character is to:
    • Go to the map interface.
    • Look for the icon with the character name.
  • Alternatively, you can:
    • Go to the map interface.
    • Enter the inventory.
    • Select "Characters".
    • Select the character you wish to find.
    • Press "Go to map location".

What happens if I engage with characters in a hurtful or unkind way?

  • Depending on the interaction, if you select dialogue that is unkind, characters will at first be offended.
  • If you continue to treat a character in an unkind way, they will end the interaction, sending you back to the map interface.
  • You will need to restart your interaction with that character from the beginning to proceed through your quest.
  • Note: Some characters have a bit of an attitude, and it can be hard to know what responses are hurtful to that character. Students are encouraged to connect with characters in different ways to build rapport.

How do I give a character an item they may need?

  • If you think you have an item that a character may need, find that character on the map interface.
  • Select the character.
  • Begin interacting with that character.
  • When the option to give the character an item is presented, all your items will be displayed in a pop-out bar.
  • Select the correct item to give to the character.

What happens if I don’t have the item the character needs?

  • Characters will reject items they don’t need.
  • You will have to continue until you find the right item that they need.
  • Note: Items are linked to overcoming the characters’ individual problems. Try to imagine the potential an item might have for a character, to help you find the right item.

Rolling levels

What are rolling levels?

  • As you explore the world, you’ll encounter rolling levels that require you to control the Orb to restore colour to the world.
  • These encounters will be in the form of rolling challenges that often involve the Murks, which will attempt to prevent you from restoring colour.
  • To avoid them, players must tilt the screen or use the keyboard arrows.

How can I make rolling easier?

  • If you’re finding rolling too hard after a few attempts, a power-pellet will appear.
  • You can make rolling easier by using power-pellets.
  • Power-pellets provide the player with a shield from the Murks until they are hit by a Murk or until their power runs out.
  • To use the power-pellet, direct your Orb until it hits the power-pellet, which will appear as a blue ball in the challenge levels.

Can I exit the rolling challenges if I’m having difficulty?

  • If a student is having difficulty, you could encourage other members of the class to assist.
  • A teacher cheat function is included – if you pause the rolling level and tap on the pause button again ten times, the level will be completed.
  • However, use of this function is discouraged, as students should build resiliency skills during these challenge levels.

Completing the game

How do I know when I have completed the game?

  • On completion, a notification will appear to congratulate you on completing the ReachOut Orb game.
  • Note: The game is complete only once all your quests with characters are complete and all items have been found and used.

Can I continue to play ReachOut Orb after my quest is completed?

  • On completion of the ReachOut Orb game, you can continue to restore colour to the world by playing the additional rolling challenges.
  • The additional challenges will be indicated by yellow icons.
  • Note: This feature is useful for keeping occupied those students who have finished the game before their classmates.

Ending your game play

How do I logout of ReachOut Orb?

  • Select the side bar from the map interface.
  • Select the logout option.
  • Click "Logout".
  • Note: If you wish to continue play on another device, you will need to be online (to save your progress).
